Modern Drummer: John Blackwell, hot off his DVD for Hudson Music, is on the live Prince box set, One Nite Alone?Live. That sounds cool to me Prince, John Blackwell with Maceo Parker and Sheila E.

I don't mean to sound too negative here, but if you've seen Blackwell's instructional DVD, you know EXACTLY what to expect from him on something else in my opinion. His twirling and backbeat are fun to watch, but I feel that he had no business making an instructional DVD, let alone a DOUBLE disc set. I personally never watch that DVD set anymore. The MD performance is really the only thing worth watching on there, and I've put the second disc in my DVD player a total of one time. I'm a little angry that I didn't get Steve Smith's DVD instead since I hear it's MUCH more informative.

Hi Plaid, I know about the instructional DVD but the latest CD from Prince is IMO amazing and has nothing to do with JB's twirling etc. He plays great and I hope that's what he is doing!!!

I saw him playing a kit on the floor at the NAMM show. His playing was very sloppy, and his grooves just dissolved after each fill. Maybe he was tired or uninspired, but his playing didn't do anything for me. He would do a twirl the drum sticks lick, flub notes here and there, stop, do something else etc... He actually sounded very unprofessional. I shot some Mpeg video, and then I erased it so I could take some more pictures of the show.
